چکیده

Please cite this article in press as: Talei, A., et a Expert Systems with Applications (2010), doi:10.1 Intelligent computing tools based on fuzzy logic and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been successfully applied in various problems with superior performances. A new approach of combining these two powerful AI tools, known as neuro-fuzzy systems, has increasingly attracted scientists in different fields. Although many studies have been carried out using this approach in pattern recognition and signal processing, few studies have been undertaken to evaluate their performances in hydrologic modeling, specifically rainfall–runoff (R–R) modeling. This study presents an application of an Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), as a neuro-fuzzy-computational technique, in event-based R–R modeling in order to evaluate the capabilities of this method for a sub-catchment of Kranji basin in Singapore. Approximately two years of rainfall and runoff data which from 66 separate rainfall events were analyzed in this study. Two different approaches in the selection criteria for calibration events were adopted and the performance of an ANFIS R–R model was compared against an established physically-based model called Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) in R–R modeling. The results of this study show that the selected neuro-fuzzy-computational technique (ANFIS) is comparable to SWMM in event-based R–R modeling. In addition, ANFIS is found to be better at peak flow estimation compared to SWMM. This study demonstrates the promising potential of neuro-fuzzy-computationally inspired hybrid tools in R–R modeling and analysis. 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Rainfall-runoff modelling using adaptive neuro-fuzzy systems

Two important applications of rainfall-runoff models are forecasting and simulation. At present, rainfall-runoff models based on artificial intelligence methods are built basically for short-term forecasting purposes and these models are not very effective for simulation purposes. This study explores the applicability and effectiveness of adaptive neuro-fuzzy-system-based rainfall-runoff models...

Automatic Calibration of HEC-HMS Model Using Multi-Objective Fuzzy Optimal Models

Estimation of parameters of a hydrologic model is undertaken using a procedure called “calibration” in order to obtain predictions as close as possible to observed values. This study aimed to use the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for automatic calibration of the HEC-HMS hydrologic model, which includes a library of different event-based models for simulating the rainfall-runoff pr...

Evaluation of the Efficiency of the Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in the Modeling of the Ionosphere Total Electron Content Time Series Case Study: Tehran Permanent GPS Station

Global positioning system (GPS) measurements provide accurate and continuous 3-dimensional position, velocity and time data anywhere on or above the surface of the earth, anytime, and in all weather conditions. However, the predominant ranging error source for GPS signals is an ionospheric error. The ionosphere is the region of the atmosphere from about 60 km to more than 1500 km above the eart...
